Do I Need a Prescription to Receive
Physical Therapy Treatment?
Yes. To receive Physical therapy
treatment at PAPT you will need a prescription from your
Physician, nurse practitioner, podiatrist, dentist or
Physician assistant (acting as an agent for the physician)
according to New York state law. Please note that New
York State law does not allow us to accept a referral for
physical therapy services from a Chiropractor, Acupuncturist
or any other health care provider not listed above. New York
State also requires that prescriptions are written by New York
Licensed Health care practitioners. Thus we can not accept a
referral from out of state providers listed above, except in
one instance. If the practitioner is 25 miles or less from the
border of New York State we can accept a referral from them.
To find out more about about these and other similar question
you can go directly to the
New York State
Board for Physical Therapy website (please see question #6 on the page for information about out of state referrals)
However, we can perform
a one-time evaluation of a disability, injury, disease
or other condition of health without a referral (prescription)
from any of the above practitioners. . Subsequent
treatment sessions will require a prescription.
According to the Executive Secretary of
the New
York State Board for Physical Therapy Physical Therapist
can also provide prevention services to the public without a
referral. This is defined as interventions that provide
instruction in self-help skills to individuals or groups. It
is also considered the promotion of health, wellness and
fitness preventing the progression from a healthy state to
pathology.
Prevention is considered different from
treatment in the following ways. Our physical therapist
instruct you with methods and techniques that:
-
promote general health especially in
susceptible or potentially susceptible populations, such as
performers who have to work in abnormal environments.
-
minimize the potential for or prevent
injuries or disease, functional limitations and disabilities
through our on site injury prevention programs and dancer
screening programs
-
We can also work with you to decrease the
duration, severity and sequelae of diseases
-
Or therapist specialize in working to
limit the degree of disability of your chronic or irreversible
debilitating diseases such as arthritis.
PAPT is one of leaders in the field for
Prevention screenings, prevention activities and health,
wellness and fitness promotion. Our programs are as follows:
Prevention screening activities such as:
-
Identification of risk factors for
musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace.
-
work place evaluations that include
performer specific exercises for stretching, strengthening,
endurance (static and dynamic) and postural training to
prevent job related disabilities. This is our pre-show or
pre-production screening program.
-
Post acute evaluation of performer
movement dysfunctions with suggestions that modify movement
patterns to minimize or eliminate further/repetitive injury
e.g. a musician with epicondilitis (tendonitis around the
elbow) we will assess and then give corrections to
dysfunctional movement patterns found when playing to ensure
the most efficient postures and movement patterns for that
individual is learned.
-
Patients with Arthritis will work with our
therapist to limit the degree of their specific disability or
chronic problem. We do this through cardiovascular
conditioning, resistive exercise and maintaining flexibility
and fitness levels.
Promoting general Health and prevention
activities in well individuals include:
-
performance and conditioning programs that
specifically look at performance techniques and movement
patterns with suggestions that modify these dysfunctional
movement patterns found to enhance performance.
-
Classes that will help enhance/maintain
coordination and balance skills that are found in most normal
individuals and that usually get worse as we age.
-
Performer specific exercise programs that
include cardiovascular conditioning to help improve the
fitness level of all our patients not just performers.
Please note that many insurance companies
do not cover preventative care. If you are interested in using
any of our services that do not require a referral from one of
the above medical practitioners we will provide you with a
bill that outlines our "preventative physical therapy
services" that were provided to you. You will be responsible
for payment of any non referral based sessions provided at the
end of the session. Please see our rates
for cost for our prevention care programs. If you would like
to have any of the above sessions with one of our therapist
please contact us.
