Post Surgical Rehabilitation
The therapists at PAPT believe that surgery should be a last resort. However, there are injuries that will require
surgery if the performer wants to continue his or her career. These surgeries are beneficial, yet traumatic, and so require comprehensive rehabilitation.
Physical therapy is a vital component to any post surgical course to restore range of motion, gain strength and endurance, and prepare the individual to
return to the unique demands of performing. Some patients may receive a post-op protocol from their surgeon which dictates a basic timeline for recovery,
including what exercises and activities can be performed at each stage of rehab. If no protocol is given, we use our own expertise to design a program
catered to each patient's specific needs, depending on the particular procedure that was performed. In the beginning, treatment is usually focused on
decreasing pain and swelling, and increasing ROM. In this phase, therapy is less aggressive in order to give the body a chance to heal. Once the initial
pain and swelling have subsided, the treatment focus shifts to increasing strength and endurance, and patients will be given a more aggressive home
exercise program. In the final stage of post surgical rehabilitation, we work diligently to return the performer to their art. Specific and highly
aggressive exercises are designed for each patient to mimic the demands of his or her particular job. With these challenging tasks tailored to each performer,
the individual regains the strength, endurance, balance and agility needed to make a full recovery and return to work.
