Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger points are taut bands or knots
of fibers that develop within the muscle. They
are usually extremely tender and when pushed upon, the pain
may radiate to other nearby areas. After an injury,
both from trauma or overuse, nearby muscles will spasm in
attempt to protect the injured area; painful trigger points
often develop in these muscles.
Trigger point therapy is a static
pressure technique used to release and smooth out the involved
muscle fibers and alleviate the pain they cause. After
several treatments, the involved area will have decreased
stiffness and tension, increased range of motion and flexibility
and increased blood flow. This technique is commonly
used in conjunction with myofascial release and therapeutic
massage.
